Stroke Riskometer is an assessment tool to
assess your risk of stroke over the next 5 to 10 years
based on your answers to 20 questions. It is
a great tool to assess and regularly monitor your risk of
stroke. The Stroke Riskometer App has been
scientifically tested and presented to the scientific
community at national and international
scientific forums. It is being used in over 70 countries, and
the number of countries is growing fast.
Stroke Riskometer Pro will provide some
advice on how you can manage the risk factors that are
relevant to you. You can also email your
results to yourself or a person of your choice (doctor, family
etc.).
Stroke is a very disabling disease, and is
the second highest cause of death worldwide with someone
having a stroke every 45 seconds. But stroke
is highly preventable and could be avoided in over 80%
of cases if people knew their risk of
stroke, their risk factors and how to control them. By reviewing
your personal risk you have the ability to
reduce your risk of suffering the debilitating effects of
stroke.
Stroke Riskometer and Stroke Riskometer Pro are available on both Apple App Store and GooglePlay.
Stroke Riskometer is free for everyone. The Stroke Riskometer Pro has a small download fee which
you pay only once, and all future app updates are provided free.
Stroke Riskometer is a not-for-profit app and all money from sales go to AUT University to support
further research and education in New Zealand and internationally.
The small amount of money you paid for the Stroke Riskometer Pro is not refundable.
Information provided on this app is not designed or intended to constitute medical advice or be used
for diagnosis. Due to unique individual needs and medical history, please consult your doctor
regarding any concerns you have regarding your risk. Your doctor will assess the information for
your specific situation and assist you in decisions regarding treatment and/or medication.
If your risk is low (same as someone of your
age and sex without any additional risk factors), it is
recommended that you reassess your risk on
an annual basis in alignment with other medical
assessments; perhaps in partnership with
your physician so that your result can be recorded into
your medical files. It is recommended
tore-assess your risk each time your health condition changes
or there are changes in your lifestyle
(diet, physical activity, smoking status, etc). It is important to
remember that although your current risk of
stroke is notelevated, some people in that relatively
low stroke risk category may still develop a
stroke in their lifetime. To lower your risk of developing a
stroke and remain in the low risk category
you will need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
If your risk is elevated (greater than
someone of your age and sex without any additional risk
factors), it is recommended to re-assess
your risk at least every six months and each time your
health condition changes or changes in your
lifestyle are introduced (diet, physical activity, smoking
status, etc.).
Prevention of stroke, heart attack, diabetes and dementia is a lifelong endeavor. We encourage you
to keep the app and use it each time you have changes in your health or lifestyle to see what impact
these changes make on your risk and how to manage your risk appropriately. We also plan to update
the app as soon as new scientific evidence about prevention of stroke, heart attack, diabetes and
dementia becomes available. By keeping the app on your smartphone you will automatically be
notified about updates.
The Stroke Riskometer is developed by
Professor Valery Feigin, from AUT’s National Institute for
Stroke and Applied Neurosciences. Prof.
Valery Feigin is a world leading stroke research expert and a
practicing clinician.
The Stroke Riskometer is endorsed by AUT
University, the World Stroke Organization, the World
Federation of Neurology and the
International Association of Neurology and Epidemiology.
The Stroke Riskometer Pro contains
internationally recognised guidelines on managing risk factors.
RIBURST is an international collaborative study that aims to better understand the risk factors
associated with stroke, heart attack, dementia and diabetes mellitus and to assess how much
influence each risk factor has on the likelihood of having a stroke, heart attack, dementia and
diabetes mellitus in the future. You can contribute to this study by submitting your results through
the app, to help researchers better understand stroke, heart attack, dementia and diabetes mellitus
to improve prevention of these devastating disorders within your own and the international
community. The study is conducted according to the internationally accepted Good Clinical Practice
Guidelines and relevant regional regulatory (Ethics Committee) requirements. Your participation is
completely voluntary. Please see the Research section of the Stroke Riskometer app for more
information on the study and the consent form.
The study has been approved by Auckland University of Technology Ethics Committee on
22/07/2014 – AUTEC Reference number 14/201.
If you do not elect to participate in the
study, your results are not collected. If you elect to
participate in the study, your data is
collected twice for research purposes (at the beginning of the
study and 12 months later). This data will
be encrypted and kept in a secure database at AUT
University.
